About Exercise Bikes
In spite of the competition from hip new fitness inventions, exercise bikes remain popular options for home exercise. They offer the same aerobic benefits of riding a cycle at any point, in any weather, without leaving the safety and comfort of home.
Exercise bikes don’t take up much space, need minimal balance or coordination, and can supply a good workout for all levels of users, from noobs to significant rivals. While the same could be said for a bunch of other kinds of home fitness kit, the exercise bike is among the few that enables you to watch TV or read a mag while you manage to work out. For many individuals, having convenient access to quality exercise kit is crucial to sticking with a long term exercising schedule.

Schwinn has a reputation for making good low-end bicycles so I figured they could make a decent exercise bike. It took me about an hour to put it together and my only complaint about the instructions is I needed my reading glasses to follow them. All the tools you need are included but you will need a knife to cut open the shrinkwrap packaging all the fiddly bits come in. The bike is heavy so you should move it to its final location before assembling it.
The parts themselves are very well made – almost over-engineered. It’s very quiet (quieter than the fan I use to cool me) even when I’m cranking hard. I weigh 220lbs and I’m a long-distance cyclist so I can generate a lot of power but there’s no sign of flex anywhere. All the holes lined up and there were no parts missing (or extra) for me. A couple of nice features I didn’t realize I was getting is recessed wheels at the front and a grab handle at the back, adjustable leveling feet at the back, and a place to mount a water bottle cage (cage not included). If you don’t like the pedals (perhaps you prefer clipless) you can replace the ones that come with the bike with any regular bike pedals.
I found the operating instructions a litte confusing at first but I got the hang of them eventually. I really like the custom profile feature. This bike actually has more features than the exercise bike at my old gym. I say “old” because I dropped my membership. I was paying $410 a year for the gym and I only used the bikes so this exercise bike should pay for itself in only 10 months.
One other thing. I’m 6’1″ and I have the seat set roughly in the middle of the range. I think this bike would fit anyone between 5′ and 6’8″ height although it is a little awkward adjusting the seat so sharing the bike between people of widely different heights might not be a great idea. Overall, though, considering the quality, features and cost I have to say I am very pleased.
This bike was easy to assemble and is easy to use. It has a broad seat and back and has proven to be a good alternative to my treadmill which I can no longer use because of degeneration of my spine due to arthritis. The recumbent bike has adequate support for my back and buttocks to keep from putting pressure on degenerating vertabrae. It has many adjustments for comfort. Moreover, once set to a program, it returns to that program for each subsequent use with just the touch of a button.
I wanted a mid-range exercise bike that was quiet, solid, reliable but reasonable priced. After a bit of research I decided on the Schwinn 220 and now after 6 weeks of use I am pleased that this has turned out well.
Assembly was very straightforward and took about 90 minutes on my own. Only problem was my own where I didn’t look at the instructions carefully and spent too much time trying to screw on one of the pedals until I realised that one had a reverse thread.
Performance has lived up to expectations. I find the seat / position adjusted well and is comfortable. There is no noise during use and it feels very solid. There is a good range of workout options ranging from easy through to challenging.
The display is very clear and easy to use. There are a couple of small improvements which would have been nice. This model only supports one user’s settings and history with everybody else being a guest. As my wife uses it as well it would have been better if it supported settings for a number of real users. Then there is a silly bug with the history summary which shows number of workouts, hours of use, miles, calories etc. The hours of use has been calculated thinking that a 30 minute workout is 0.3 of an hour. So 10 30 minute workouts show up as 3 hours rather than 5. No big deal but a bit sloppy.
Overall I am pleased with the choice and use it regularly now.
Setup was easy using the assembly manual on Schwinn’s website. Only major complaint is you can only setup one user and the rest are Guest users. It would be nice if you could setup 2 or more users. Bike is stable and comfortable.
After a lot of research, I settle on the Schwinn. I received it in one day shipping and FedX set it right in living room. Carried it piece by piece upstairs to assemble. It smelled like just made, paint smell and seat material. Easy to put together if you read instructions. Very quiet to use and watch TV too. You could not ask for a better product or delivery.
